Supply Only or Supply and Fit, Said Before They Ask
Supply-only and supply-and-fit are two different businesses that look identical from the outside, and a flooring website almost never says which one it is running, which muddies what the business could be named for when somebody searches for a fitter. The customer finds out at quote stage, which is the worst possible moment, because by then they have already decided you are the one.
The question underneath the question
Nobody asks whether you fit. They ask what it costs, and the two answers differ by a number they have no way to reconstruct. A supply-only price and a supply-and-fit price for the same material are not comparable figures, and a customer collecting three quotes will place them side by side as though they were.
You lose that comparison without ever being told you were in it. The cheapest-looking quote wins a conversation you never got to have.
Three arrangements, and they carry different liability
Supply only means the goods are yours and the installation is somebody else’s. If the floor fails because of how it was laid, the fault is not yours, and the customer usually does not understand that until it happens.
Supply and fit means both are yours. One invoice, one company, one place the complaint lands.
Supply and recommend is the middle case and the most common: you sell the material and hand over a fitter’s number. It feels like supply and fit to the customer and it is legally supply only, and that gap is exactly where the worst disputes live.
Say which one, and say it where the price is
The statement belongs beside the figure, not on an about page. A price with no arrangement attached is an incomplete sentence, and the customer completes it with whichever assumption suits them.
Write the arrangement into the quote itself and into the page the quote comes from. One line: this figure covers material delivered to your address, or this figure covers material, preparation, fitting and removal of the old floor.
What supply-only businesses should publish anyway
Declining to fit is a position, not an absence, and it can be published as strength. What you supply, to what standard, in what quantities, with what lead time. Whether you will recommend fitters and on what basis. What happens if the material is right and the installation is wrong, which is the question that actually worries somebody spending four thousand pounds.
A supply-only business that explains the boundary clearly reads as specialised. One that leaves it blank reads as evasive, and an assistant asked whether a company fits floors will not name a source that does not say.
What supply-and-fit businesses undersell
If you carry both halves, the thing worth publishing is not that you fit. It is that one company carries the whole fault. A customer who has heard the story of a retailer and a fitter blaming each other will pay more for a single point of responsibility, and most flooring sites never state that they are one.
Say who employs the fitters, or that they are regular subcontractors you have used for years and stand behind. Say where a complaint goes. That is the buying argument, and it is sitting unused on almost every supply-and-fit website in the country.
The boundary of what we do here
SIMLL does not supply flooring, fit it, employ fitters, or advise on how any flooring business should structure its trading arrangements or its liability. We sell none of it, and nothing on this page is legal advice. Whether you fit what you sell is a commercial and legal decision for your business, taken with your own advisers. Our part begins after the decision and is confined to whether the arrangement is stated where a customer reads it before they compare you to somebody else.

Which company the customer is actually contracting with is the sharper end of this and is set out in who you are actually contracting with, while who lays the floor and who they answer to covers the crew. The consequence when the arrangement was never stated is how an installation voids a product warranty. All of it sits inside how a flooring business actually gets found.
Frequently asked questions
Should a flooring website say whether we fit?
Yes, and beside the price rather than on an about page. A figure with no arrangement attached is an incomplete sentence, and the customer finishes it with whichever assumption suits them.
We supply and recommend a fitter. What is that?
Legally it is usually supply only, and to the customer it feels like supply and fit. That gap is where the worst disputes live, so the page should state that the fitter is separately engaged and what that means if the installation goes wrong.
Does saying we do not fit lose us work?
It loses enquiries that were never going to convert and protects the quotes that were. A supply-only business that explains the boundary reads as specialised; one that leaves it blank reads as evasive.
What is the strongest thing a supply-and-fit business can publish?
That one company carries the whole fault. A customer who has heard of a retailer and a fitter blaming each other will pay for a single point of responsibility, and almost no flooring site states plainly that it is one.
Why does this affect price comparisons?
Because a supply-only figure and a supply-and-fit figure for the same material are not comparable, and a customer holding three quotes will compare them anyway. You lose that comparison without being told you were in it.
