The Material Has to Sit in the Room First
Flooring has a step in its timeline that exists in no other trade: the material is delivered into the house and then deliberately left alone, sometimes for several days, before anyone is allowed to install it.
What acclimation is and why it is not optional
Wood and many resilient products move with temperature and humidity. A board that arrives from a warehouse at one moisture content and is fixed down before it reaches equilibrium with the room will shrink or expand afterwards, and the result is gapping in winter or cupping and buckling in summer.
Manufacturers publish acclimation requirements as conditions of warranty, which places this in the same category as substrate moisture: not a craftsman’s preference but a term of the product’s guarantee.
Why it is worth a page of its own
A customer told on the day that the floor will sit in boxes in their hallway for three days, in a house they have already emptied of furniture, will conclude the job is being delayed for the installer’s convenience.
The same customer told two weeks earlier, with the reason, treats it as evidence the business knows what it is doing. The information is identical and only the timing changed the reaction, which is the whole argument for publishing it.
The rest of the schedule, stated honestly
Furniture out and the room cleared, and by whom. Delivery and the acclimation period, with the number of days for the product being bought. Removal of the old floor and disposal. Subfloor assessment and any preparation, which is the step that can extend everything. Installation. Trim, transitions and doors. When the room can be walked on, and when furniture can go back, which for some adhesives is not the same day.
The last two are the ones customers plan their lives around and the ones quotes never mention.
Say which products need it and which do not
Not everything acclimates. Some products are engineered specifically so they do not have to, and a business that says so is giving a customer a genuine reason to choose one product over another rather than a sales line.
That is also the honest form of the argument: the fast option exists, here is what it costs and what it gives up.
The boundary of what we do here
SIMLL does not schedule work, install flooring, advise on acclimation periods or make any representation about any product’s requirements. We sell none of it, and nothing on this page is legal or regulatory advice. Acclimation requirements come from the manufacturer’s published specification and a business should follow that and its own advisers. Our part begins afterwards and covers only whether the schedule is explained before a customer clears their house.

A step no other trade has, where the product sits in the house doing nothing, is exactly the sort of thing that earns a business getting found by buyers before the showroom. Skipping it is one of the named ways cover is lost on day one, and it compounds lead time on anything not already in the building.
Frequently asked questions
What is acclimation?
Leaving the flooring material in the room where it will be installed until it reaches equilibrium with that room’s temperature and humidity. A board fixed down before it does will shrink or expand afterwards.
Is it optional?
Manufacturers publish acclimation requirements as conditions of warranty, which puts it in the same category as substrate moisture: a term of the product’s guarantee rather than an installer’s preference.
Why publish it in advance?
Because a customer told on the day, in a house already emptied of furniture, concludes the job is being delayed for the installer’s convenience. Told two weeks earlier with the reason, the same customer treats it as evidence of competence.
What else should the schedule state?
Who clears the room, delivery and the acclimation days for the product being bought, removal and disposal, subfloor assessment and preparation, installation, trim and doors, and when the floor can be walked on and furniture returned.
Do all products need acclimation?
No. Some are engineered specifically so they do not, and saying which is a genuine reason to prefer one product rather than a sales line.
