Why Your Best Work Never Becomes a Reference

A restoration reference is harder to obtain than a roofer’s for a reason that has nothing to do with the standard of your work: a homeowner is happy to have a new roof photographed and considerably less happy to be introduced as the person whose basement filled with sewage. What you publish instead is the evidence an assistant holds when a customer searches and a firm gets named.

The problem is real and it is not an excuse

Your customers have every reason to want the episode forgotten. A flood, a fire or a sewage backup carries embarrassment, and in some cases it involves an insurance claim the householder would rather not discuss with a stranger.

So the usual reference request asks somebody to relive the worst thing that happened in their house, for the benefit of a company that has already been paid. Worth acknowledging before you build a proof page on the assumption that references in this trade work like references anywhere else.

What works instead

Anonymised case accounts. What the loss was, what was done, how long it took, what the readings showed, what the claim outcome was, with no name and no address. That gives the person comparing you the useful content of a reference without asking anybody to be identified. It also gives an AI assistant something to repeat, since an assistant can only state what a source states plainly, and a testimonial states almost nothing.

A case account with the drying log in it is more persuasive than a named reference without one, because somebody comparing companies is trying to establish competence rather than friendliness.

Commercial references are different

Property managers, landlords and businesses have no comparable reluctance, and a commercial customer will frequently speak on the record. Those references are easier for you to obtain and they carry the additional weight of a professional buyer who was in a position to compare.

If you work both sides, lean on the commercial references and use anonymised accounts for the domestic work rather than pushing householders.

Ask properly when asking at all

Ask after the claim has closed rather than during it. Offer to withhold the address and the nature of the loss. Say how the reference will be used and give the customer the right to withdraw it. Asking in that form gets you fewer references and gets them from people who are genuinely willing.

What to avoid entirely

Before and after photographs that identify a house. A recognisable street view, a doorway, a distinctive room, all of it identifies somebody’s home and the event that happened in it, and consent you collected on the day of completion is not consent given with a clear head.

The boundary of what we do here

Gathering references is not something we do. We approach nobody’s customers, we verify nobody’s account of past work, and we say nothing about how any individual job went. We sell none of it, and nothing on this page is legal or regulatory advice. What may be published about a customer is a privacy matter and, where an insurance claim is involved, may be a contractual one, so a business should take its position from its own advisers. Our part covers only how a reference set is presented once it exists and consent is settled.

SEO Is My Love Language was founded by Jose Villalobos, who has spent his career on a single discipline: getting businesses found, cited, and recommended by AI search. He has been a member of Koray Tuğberk Gübür’s Holistic SEO Community since 2022, is a graduate of the Topical Authority Course, holds the Google AI Professional Certificate, and is a member of Kyle Roof’s IMG. That combination, topical authority strategy paired with rigorous on-page execution, is what our team brings to every business we work with.

A new roof is on public display and a sewage backup is not, so your proof has to be built rather than collected, which puts more weight on the visibility work references cannot replace. The other half of the proof problem is the public half of restoration social proof.

Frequently asked questions

Why can I not get references the way other trades do?

Because a flood, a fire or a sewage backup carries embarrassment, and the usual request asks somebody to relive the worst thing that happened in their house for the benefit of a company that has already been paid.

What should I publish instead?

Anonymised case accounts: what the loss was, what was done, how long it took, what the readings showed and what the claim outcome was, with no name and no address.

Will an anonymised account convince anybody?

Yes, because the person comparing companies is trying to establish competence rather than friendliness. A case account with your drying log in it is more persuasive than a named reference without one.

Should I lean on commercial references instead?

Where you have them, yes. Property managers, landlords and businesses have no comparable reluctance, will frequently speak on the record, and carry the additional weight of a professional buyer who was in a position to compare.

What should I never put on the site?

Photographs that identify a house. A recognisable street view or distinctive room identifies somebody’s home and the event that happened in it, and consent you collected on completion day is not consent given with a clear head.
