How to Choose an AI Search Agency
Choose an agency by running five checks in order, capability, evidence, visibility, commitment and exit, because each one is only worth asking when the previous has passed. Most buyers run them in reverse, starting with price, and a buyer who opens with price is being sold to rather than buying.

Check one, can they do the work
Capability is the cheapest check and the one that ends conversations fastest, so it goes first. Three questions settle it: what exactly is delivered each month, who inside the company does that work, and whether they have done it in your category before.
A scope of work that names quantities can be compared against another scope of work. One that promises to improve your visibility cannot be compared against anything, because there is no version of the next twelve months in which the agency has failed to deliver it.
Each of the three questions has an answer worth settling before the call. What a scope of work has to name sets out the quantities that make two proposals comparable at all. Who actually does the work at a marketing agency covers how to establish whether the people in the pitch are the people on the account. And category experience splits into two separate questions, whether specialisation in your industry is worth paying for and whether an agency that only does SEO is narrower or simply better at it.
Check two, is the evidence real
Evidence is worth examining only once capability is plausible, and it splits into three things that are usually presented as one. A case study is a claim the agency wrote about itself. A review is public and can be bought. A reference is private, specific and refusable, which is why it is the most informative of the three and the least often offered.
Ask for a reference from a client in your category who joined more than a year ago. The request is ordinary and the response to it is diagnostic.
The three are checked in different ways. Verifying a case study means tracing the claim back to something outside the agency’s own site. Where agency reviews live and what each platform is worth separates the places a rating can be bought from the ones where it cannot. And a reference call is only diagnostic if you ask the questions a satisfied client can still answer honestly. We publish our own AI search visibility measured the same way, including the nine responses out of eighteen that named no agency at all.
Check three, what will you actually know
An agency that measures an outcome can show you a reading it did not like, and one that reports activity cannot, because activity always looks like progress. This is the check that separates a programme from a retainer with a report attached.
Ask what the number will be, who produces it, how often, and what happens to it when it moves the wrong way. An answer that describes effort rather than outcome is an answer about the agency rather than about your business.
What an AI visibility measurement actually measures describes what a reading contains and what it cannot see, and what to ask an agency about how it measures turns that into questions for the call. Two more answers set the expectation before anything is signed: how long before an assistant names your business, and what can and cannot be guaranteed in AI search.
Check four, what are you committing to
Cost, charging model and contract length are three separate questions that vendors present as one, and separating them is most of the work. The monthly figure tells you very little on its own: a lower number against a longer minimum term and a wider scope can cost more in total than a higher one.
Price belongs fourth rather than first because a number has no meaning until the previous three checks have established what is being bought. A buyer who leads with budget invites a proposal built to fit the budget rather than the problem.
Taken one at a time: what SEO and AI search visibility actually cost covers the range and what moves a quote inside it, what a low monthly fee actually buys covers what has to be cut to reach a cheap number, retainer, project or performance covers the three charging models and who each one favours, and how long you should sign for covers the term itself, which is the figure that turns a monthly price into a total.
Check five, how do you leave
Exit is last in the sequence and first in the contract, which is the trap. Notice period, renewal mechanism, content ownership and account ownership are all settled before any work begins, and they decide whether leaving costs you the work you already paid for.
The single highest-value clause to read is the one naming who owns the accounts. An agency that creates your analytics or advertising accounts under its own umbrella can leave with them, and that is arranged at the start or not at all.
Who owns the content an agency writes for you covers the licence question that decides whether the pages stay yours after the invoices stop, and how to leave a marketing retainer covers the notice period, the handover and the accounts in the order they have to be settled.
The two things you cannot check in advance
Two of the most important things about an agency are not verifiable before signing, and pretending otherwise is how buyers get caught.
Whether the named people do your work. The team in the pitch is not contractually the team on the account unless the contract says so. This is checkable only in the second month.
Whether they tell you bad news early. Every agency says it will. The behaviour appears the first time something goes wrong, which is after you have signed.
The workable protection is structural rather than diligent: short initial commitment, ownership arranged up front, and a reporting rhythm that surfaces a bad month rather than absorbing it.
Our answers to the same five
Applying the sequence to ourselves, in the same order.
Capability. Content built to be the source an assistant quotes, produced by the person who sells it. Evidence. We publish our own AI search visibility reading, including that assistants named us zero times out of 18 responses on 31 July 2026. Visibility. A frozen prompt set re-run identically, with the raw responses kept, so a reading can be checked rather than trusted. Commitment. Published pricing and no minimum term beyond the notice period. Exit. Content assigned on payment, assignment surviving termination, accounts registered to you.

That combination, topical authority strategy paired with rigorous on-page execution, is what our team brings to every business we work with.
The five checks are the same five whatever is being marketed, and each of the categories we publish maps carries its own version of the decision: how an independent flooring retailer decides who to hire, the restoration marketing decision itself, and the law firm version, which names the vendor type for each channel including the ones we do not sell.
Frequently asked questions
How do I choose an AI search agency?
Run five checks in order: whether they can do the work, whether their evidence is real, what you will actually know, what you are committing to, and how you leave. Each is only worth asking once the previous has passed, and price belongs fourth rather than first because a number means nothing until you know what is being bought.
What should I ask an agency before signing?
Ask what is delivered each month in specific quantities, who inside the company does that work, for a reference from a client in your category who joined over a year ago, what the reported number will be and what happens when it moves the wrong way, and who owns the accounts and the content.
Is a cheaper agency always worse?
Not always, but a monthly figure means little on its own. A lower number attached to a longer minimum term and a vaguer scope can cost more in total than a higher one, so compare the total commitment and the named deliverables rather than the headline rate.
What cannot be checked before signing?
Whether the people in the pitch actually do your work, and whether the agency tells you bad news early. Neither is verifiable in advance, so the protection is structural: a short initial commitment, account and content ownership arranged up front, and a reporting rhythm that surfaces a bad month.
Should I hire a specialist in my industry?
Industry experience shortens the ramp and is worth real money, but it is not free of cost: an agency deep in your category may already work with a competitor in your area. Ask directly who else in your trade and your region they serve.
